During the upcoming fall semester, I will be working for my third year as Student Coordinator of the Honors Learning Community. The Honors Learning Community is a group comprised of all freshman students enrolled in the HON 1000 City One course. The objective of this organization is to provide students with a supportive atmosphere in which to begin a successful college career. In addition to group discussions and campus involvement, the Honors LC has evolved into a service student organization. Last fall, the students worked together gathering items to donate to the Ronald McDonald Charity House, a temporary residence for families of patients at Children’s Hospital in the Detroit Medical Center. This year, I am planning to work with the new Honors LC students to sponsor a shoe drive in the fall and a book drive in the spring. It is important for students to understand that they can make a positive impact on the city of Detroit.
