Harms Elementary School

Harms Elementary School, located about 10 minutes from campus in southwest Detroit, is a Detroit Public School that serves a primarily Latino student body and offers grades K-5. WSU students interested in doing community service at Harms can take a special section of Intermediate Writing (ENG 3010), which fulfills the general education requirement for a second writing course. In this service-learning course, WSU students will mentor Harms students in math, reading, science, or social studies. Mentors will work closely with a Harms teacher or administrator and will complete a total of twenty hours of community service over the semester. Reading and writing assignments for ENG 3010 will focus on experiences at Harms and on different ideas about the best way to make positive changes in local communities and in society as a whole.
