Maybury Elementary School is a Detroit Public Elementary School (grades K-5) that serves a mostly Latino student body. It is located about 10 minutes from campus in southwest Detroit. WSU students who would like to do community service at Maybury can take a special section of Intermediate Writing (ENG 3010, which fulfills the general education requirement for a second writing course). In this service-learning course, WSU students will mentor Maybury students in writing. Mentors will be trained by the reading specialist at Maybury. Reading and writing assignments for ENG 3010 will focus on teaching writing to elementary school students, cultural and ethnic difference, and ideas about how to make positive social change.
